We utilize Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), a practice requiring training and certification which focuses on safety and unmounted exercises. If many factors warrant it, therapeutic riding is introduced as well.
The TEAM Health program uses a team approach in which the key players are the client and horse or the client group and horses, a certified mental health counselor, and a certified Safety and Training Specialist who is a certified Riding Instructor. The team works with each client, parent, and outside service provider such as a physical or occupational therapist to create a set of individual goals and objectives for each client. These goals are based on the client’s life conditions, symptoms, diagnosis, functional impairment, and rehabilitation readiness.
The horse is central to the professional team. The horse is both
the therapeutic partner for the client and the therapeutic instructor
for the therapist. When clients join the program, they get to know
the horses through unmounted activities. They begin by choosing
a horse with whom to work. The goal is for the client to learn to “just
be” with the horse and experience through direct contact.
Activities to promote familiarity with the horse include grooming,
quiet time, and a variety of on the ground games. As the client becomes
more familiar with their horse, the bond between them deepens. Depending
on the needs and comfort level of the clients, activities may progress
over time to include riding. Each client is continually evaluated
and the goals adjusted as needed.
T.E.A.M. Health is certified by EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association, EAGALA.org) in Utah, which lists over 400 certified members all over the world. Clients learn to interact with horses,
animals that do not naturally seek out human affection and approval.
By forming a relationship with the horse, clients learn new ways
to communicate and solve problems.
T.E.A.M. Health offers a variety of programs for groups and individuals.
Clients are referred by parents, health officials, and mental health
clinics. Lessons are scheduled on a weekly basis. Clients generally
range in age from 3 to 18, but T.E.A.M. Health also serves adults.
In addition to therapy, T.E.A.M. Health also provides team-building
activities for businesses. Activities are tailored to meet the needs
of the groups and can be designed for part or all of a day in duration.
